What Is the PSTN Switch-Off?

PSTN stands for Public Switched Telephone Network, the traditional network used for landline calls. This business landline switch-off, including the ISDN switch-off, means businesses using affected services need to move to suitable digital alternatives.

The change can also affect equipment connected to a telephone line. Checking your phones, broadband and connected devices helps establish what needs attention before you agree a migration.

Which Business Phone Lines and Equipment Could Be Affected?

Know what your business relies on before making changes. Your main office phone might be the obvious place to start. But other equipment could depend on a traditional telephone line too.

Things worth checking include:

  • Business telephone lines and older ISDN phone systems.
  • Broadband services linked to a traditional phone line.
  • Alarm systems and monitoring equipment.
  • Lift emergency phones and door-entry systems.
  • Older card terminals, fax machines and other connected equipment.

Not every device will need replacing. Compatibility should be checked with the relevant equipment supplier before any line is changed.

Not sure what you have? A recent phone or broadband bill is a useful starting point.

Plan Your Business Phone Migration

Start with a conversation, then decide what comes next.

  1. Tell us about your current setup

We'll discuss your phones, broadband, connected equipment and anything that is causing frustration.

  2. Identify what needs checking

We'll highlight the information needed to establish which services are affected and whether specialist suppliers need to be involved.

  3. Consider a suitable way forward

Where changes are needed, we can prepare a proposal setting out the recommended services, costs and next steps.

The initial conversation helps establish the scope. Detailed equipment checks or technical work can then be agreed separately where needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About the PSTN Switch-Off

Do I have to move to full fibre?

No. The PSTN switch-off and the rollout of full fibre are different programmes. Other connections can support digital phone services where full fibre is unavailable. We can check the options for your address.

We already use internet-based phones. Do we need to do anything?

You may already have moved your main phone service. It is still worth checking for any separate traditional lines supporting other equipment or services.

What happens during a power cut?

Digital phones depend on powered equipment and connectivity. Your plan should consider suitable backup arrangements and how you would handle calls during an outage.

Can we keep our business number?

Tell us which numbers you need to retain. Number-transfer availability and arrangements must be confirmed before a move is agreed.

Can we wait for an automatic upgrade?

Openreach has announced temporary safeguards for some eligible lines, but these are limited and are not a replacement for a planned migration. Speak to your provider rather than assuming your current setup will continue unchanged.
